Obituary of Nelson Darroch

Deacon Nelson Darroch of Middleport, a Catholic deacon and retired manager at FMC Corporation of Middleport, died May 15, 2011 at Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, New York. He retired from FMC in l993 after 35 years of service at the Middleport location. Nelson served in the US Air Force for four years during the Korean conflict and was attached to the 363rd Tactical Infirmary in Japan from l951 through l954. He was a native of Lockport, born December 27, 1930 son of the late Alvin and Anna (Willse) Darroch. He graduated from Erie County Technical Institute where he met his wife Grace. Nelson and Grace were married on August 25, 1956. Nelson was ordained a permanent Deacon in the first diaconate class in the Diocese of Buffalo in l978. He served the patients at Medina Memorial Hospital and the residents of Orchard Manor for many years. Other assignments included service at St. Stephen's Middleport, St. Mary's, Gasport and St. Mary's Medina. He was a member of the 4th Degree -St. Joan of Arc Assembly and the Knights of Columbus-Medina Council 651 in Medina, NY.and he was a former member of St. Stephen's Holy Name Society. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Grace Siracuse, four children David (Darlene) of Chicago, Il; Kathleen (John) Nyerges of Rochester; Michael (Michele) of Dalton, MA,and Margaret Darroch of Middleport; Eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Survivors also include six brothers and sisters, Richard Darroch and Patricia Gibney both of East Amherst, Thomas (Carol) Darroch of West Virginia; Norma Keleher of Lockport, Alvin Darroch of California and Robert (Debbie) Darroch of Florida and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 PM and Friday from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM at the Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St., Middleport. Recitation of Office of the Dead, Liturgy of the Hours at the funeral home by the diaconate community will be held Friday at 8PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Parish/St.Stephen's RC Church, 21 Vernon street, Middleport, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Fabian Maryanski. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Middleport, NY. Memorials to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094 would be appreciated by the Darroch family. .
