Helen H. (Basinait) Mathes age 92 died March 31, 2013 at Lakeside Memorial Hospital. She was born September 16, 1920 in Albion, a daughter of the late Louis and Hazel (Seivert) Basinait and had lived in this area all of her life. Helen spent an active and varied life and touched many lives. She was Barre Town Historian for 46 years; a member of Barre Center Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and a founding member of the Cobblestone Society. Helen was active with the Barre Grange, Orleans County 4-H and the Home Bureau. She was a ham radio operator and was involved in numerous other local civil activities over the years; she will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her husband David R. Mathes in 2011; sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Dudley Mathes; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Mary Basinait; sister and brother-in-law Adelaide and Clarence Barnard; sister-in-law Mary Alice (Maynard) Moore. She is survived by her sons Todd (Lorraine) Mathes, Benjamin (Karen) Mathes, Kirk (Alice) Mathes; daughters Patricia (Gordon) Salvitti, Christine (Marshall) Janson, Rebecca (Stephen) Meyer, Priscilla (Edward) Bonsell; foster daughter Thelma Griesman; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. There are no prior calling hours. Her Memorial Service will be held Sunday April 21st at 2:00p at the Barre Center Presbyterian Church.
