My Mom and Dad brought Al home from the hospital in 1952. I remember at Show and Tell in the 5th grade how proud I was to talk about my new brother. When I went to college in the 1960, my mother asked that I call home every Tuesday evening so we all could keep in touch. Being a very cool 18 year old. it was uncool to have to call home every week. But I did, every Tuesday for four years and I came to look forward to those calls, especially when brothers Joe, Al and Bob told me about their week. What a treasure those calls were.
So many memories, so many wonderful times. Now they will have to do.

I first met Al in the fall of 1972; we were both students at Genesee Community College. Al was a Student Government Association Senator, and I was a photographer/reporter for the student newspaper. It was inevitable we would meet. On second-thought, Al was such a larger than life personality we likely would have met regardless of the SGA/newspaper construct. Al was an irrepressible personality: he played impromptu guitar, debated politics in various forums, worked on voter registration drives, was active in several campus organizations and activities, volunteered with the RAP line (telephone-based counseling service); it would have been challenging to find a cause he was not involved with- one side or the other. He stood out in a crowd. He had a passion that was only rivaled by his smile and stature. And his jeans: they were well-worn, extensively patched and suitable for framing. Of the many recollections I have of him from our college days the three things he was most passionate about were music, George McGovern and "Chris," his girlfriend, who was clearly more dear to him than music and McGovern. We parted ways after GCC, and although I heard inklings of the mark he was making in Orleans County, we didn't reconnect until I ran for 139th Assembly in 2010. Three years later I hosted a GCC reunion and Al not only attended, but he volunteered to entertain. It was at that event that I finally met Chris, whose charm verified what I had only inferred. A few years later, while attending a GLOW Progressives picnic in Stafford I ran into Al, again, and not only did he have his guitar- he brought his son, Kenneth along. Al and I linked up on Facebook which (after 40 years) provided insight into much that had transpired in that four-decade gap. I followed his campaign for Orleans County Legislature At-Large seat, his activities with the Cobblestone Museum and his challenge to commercialism in the Historic District. Sadly and unanticipated, it was to be a final chapter. And it is more than sad, ironic in fact; Al, the justice warrior, with the most generous heart, should pass due to the fragility of that very organ. Rest in Peace, my friend. You have no idea how many benefitted from your benevolence, advocacy and example.

Alphonse Capurso, Jr. I remember Al from the time he was a child. In 1965, Father Joe Rigley recruited me to bring migrant children from Coloney Camp to the St. Joe’s Boy Scout Troop. Al’s Dad, Al, Sr. asked me to help with the troop, since we were bringing in a bunch of kids. Al Jr. and Bob were scouters then and great kids and accepting of the migrant kids. Then Al worked with Rev. Ed Mangelsdorf, who headed up the 1970’s+ Drug Outreach program, a nation-wide popular approach to reaching out to kids tempted by drugs at that time. That staff were like guardian angels to youths in our community, available at all hours. Al was a tireless, 24-hour advocate and rescuer of youths in crisis. Al then became one of the first counselors for the County’s Alcoholism Counseling Program. When STOP DWI came in and dramatically changed the culture of drinking and driving, Al was at the forefront. We, the Probation Dept. dedicated one officer to handle 50 Felony level DWI’ers(95% likely to be alcoholics). Al and our Karl Holt teamed effectively keeping our probationers in treatment, sober and off the roads, so that we had no repeat offenders in nearly two years, a remarkable task in dealing with alcoholics. Karl left for greener pastures. Al continued. Bob Golden, director of Orleans Probation from ‘64 to ‘88 when he went to State Probation to set up domestic violence prevention programs. Also, Al brought to our community’s historical heritage and political life the same energy, effectiveness, generosity and kindness that he’d shown all his life. We all know he loved music, which he also willingly shared to ours and others pleasure. He was a “man for all seasons,” a loss to us all, but a gain to Heaven. Bob and Margaret Golden

Al was the real deal. He stood up for what is right, ignoring the consequences of being vocal in a sea of ignorance. His love of family defined him , and there is a photo of him looking at Chris that we all should envy. We “ resisted” together and shared our favorite music. He sang my favorite song to me at church, and the gesture moved me to tears. I was moved when he asked me to sponsor him when he joined the church. His will to live and be with us was so moving....I was amazed. It’s hard to imagine our earth without Al Capurso, but his legacy will shine on with his beautiful family......I will never forget the love that Chris manifested during those painful last months. Inspiring is the word. Knowing Chris and Al is experiencing what is right with the world.

Very sorry to hear of Al's passing. I remember him well when he would come to Medina High School to meet with my students through his role as a Social Worker. A very caring person who was an advocate, and a great "friend" to all the students he worked with. Al will be sorely missed.

To the Family of Al Capurso:
My sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of your husband, father, grandfather & friend.
I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Al over the years as my neighbor, constituent, and appointed Town Historian.
The "Al" I knew was a soft spoken man who always had a kind word for others, His musical talent was heartwarming.
Al had an incredible knowledge and passion for the Town of Gaines and Historic Preservation. He was a magnificent Town Historian and very dedicated to that position. We were very lucky to have found such a treasure.
There is some sweet music being played in heaven tonight joining many icons that have passed.
Prayers and warmest regards,
Sue Smith

Capurso Family- I know that you all are very proud of your husband, Dad, and Grandfather for all he was to your family and for his many contributions to the Orleans County community, and beyond. Rightfully so! My days spent with Al were a long 50 years ago at many Boy Scout functions and at Camp Dittmer, where all of us young guys looked up to Al as a fellow Scout and as a mentor. I have never forgotten his humor, his patience, and his passion to teach us and to help us refine our skills. Without a doubt, he is a part of the fabric in all of us. Rest in peace, Al.

Dear Chris and family, I can't be any more saddened by the loss of your dear Al. Since I first met him in his boy scout uniform through all of these years, Al always smiled and spoke so kindly of everything, from his gardening, the tortoise you used to have, the community he loved, and especially of his beautiful family. His memory will always be with me.

To the Capurso Family,
Al and I were always close as we grew up together, basically in the same house. He was a cousin brother as was his brother Bob and my cousin sister Laura. I can still remember all the scuffles and trouble we created at the Washington Street house. We were constantly told to behave by all the our aunts, uncles and grand parents. Al and I graduated together and kept in touch up to the end. I will miss my cousin Al for what he stood for and for who he was. My heart, prayers, and thoughts are with the Capurso family. May Gob Bless you my cousin. Rest in peace!
God Bless,
Cousin John J. Grillo
