Obituary of Alphonse E. Capurso

Albion: Alphonse “Al” E. Capurso, 68, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 17, surrounded by his loving family following courageous battle with heart disease. He was born June 9, 1952 in Albion, a son of the late Alphonse and Martha (Saeva) Capurso. Al graduated from Albion High School and S.U.N.Y at Brockport with a Bachelor’s in Social Work. He retired in 2012 after many years working for Orleans County, lastly as a Social Worker. He has a strong passion for history and served as the Town of Gaines Historian, member of the Cobblestone Society and Museum and also was a former president of the Orleans County Historical Society. Al was instrumental in restoring the Cobblestone School House on Gaines Basin Rd. and also the Boy Scout Log Cabin, which is now placed behind the school. Al was a member of the Rotary Club of Albion and received the Humanitarian of the Year award in 2018 for the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church. He was instrumental in installing a Historic Marker on the Orleans County Courthouse lawn, denoting the first log cabin in Albion in 1811. He was a Boy Scout and worked many summers at Camp Dittmer. Al owned and operated The Bait Barn and Tackle Shop on Gaines Rd. with the huge fish in front. Al had a strong passion for music and shared his talent throughout the community. He loved his children, grandchildren, family, friends and community beyond words. Al is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Chris (Rodden); children, Dan (Jess) Capurso, Marcia (Ken) Podolak, Carli (Josh) Ebbs and Kenneth Capurso; grandchildren, Collin, Iris, Emeline, Esmae, Curtis, Keith and Ellie; brothers, Jack (Karen) Capurso, Joe (Nancy) Capurso and Bob (Sally) Capurso; extended family Liz Capurso and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. 21 W. Avenue, Albion on Sunday, February 21, from 1:00-4:00pm. A PRIVATE funeral Service will be held at the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church. Private interment in Mt. Albion Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cobblestone Society and Museum P.O. Box 363, Albion, NY 14411 or the Orleans County Historical Society P.O. Box 181, Albion, NY 14411 Please note the Funeral Home will be operating at 50% capacity per state guidelines.
